Travel Europe - A Guide for Independent Travellers
The Canary Islands (or Canaries) are a group of islands located off the coast of northwest Africa approximately 1,600 km southwest of the Spanish mainland. They are a popular year-round vacation destination for sun-seeking Europeans.
The seven main islands in the archipelago are El Hierro, Fuerteventura, Gran Canaria, La Palma, La Gomera, Lanzarote and Tenerife. Some of the islands are quite arid while others are covered with lush, tropical vegetation.
Inexpensive flights are available to the Canaries from cities throughout Europe.
